Something Personal..................................................Page 2

Geographically, I have come full circle having just left the seven hills of San Francisco for the towering redwoods east of Santa Rosa.  I was conceived and carried in San Francisco and born here.  In between we lived for many years in the summer heat and winter fog of the great Central Valley.

My three sisters, my brother and I grew up in a self-made professional medical family strong on both the sciences and the arts.  Dad was an MD with an English background; Mom was trained as a Zoologist and avocationally explored various artistic media.  It was a sometimes volatile and an emotionally turbulent but highly creative, ambitious and academically competitive environment for me.  The push and pull of achievement versus reflection, creative expression versus  scientific discipline have been with me to this day; though as a 'failed perfectionist' and someone who is bewildered by politics, the pressures of these forces have eased with time.

The tragic deaths of my parents thirty years ago three months apart was one long torturous seminal event in my life.  I dealt with this in part with some dark but cathartic graphic creations (left)  I also had to depend more on myself as I no longer could return 'home' (though I believe it was harder still for my younger siblings who were living there at that time).  My successes or failures were mine to bear.1972 UCD COLLAGE.jpg (186137 bytes)
